We all know Wentworth Miller for his role as Michael Scofield in “Prison Break”, but there is a lot more about this American actor and screenwriter.
Did you know his birth name was Wentworth Earl Miller III?
After “Prison Break”, Miller appeared in “Dinotopia”, “The Flash”, “Legends of Tomorrow”, and “Time of Your Life” among others.
Wentworth Earl Miller III was born on 2 June 1972, in Norton, Oxfordshire, in England.
His parents are both American, and Miller holds both American and British citizenships. His father’s name is Wentworth. E. Miller, while his mother’s name is Roxann.
Wentworth E. Miller was a lawyer and a teacher, while Roxann was a special education teacher.
What is more, his father, Wentworth, has Jamaican, African-American, English, and German roots, while Roxann is of Swedish, French, Russian, Dutch, Syrian, and Lebanese ancestry.
Miller is not the only child in the family, and he has two sisters, Gillian and Leigh.
When Miller was 9 years old, his family relocated from Norton in England to Park Slope, Brooklyn, United States.
Younger Wentworth is biracial, and he actually didn’t ever take a close look at it until he got to college, where he was examining himself and questioning his existence and identity.
What is more, he simply loves growing up in Brooklyn, as this city itself was culturally rich and racial diversity was never a question.
The reason for relocation was because his father got a job in Park Slope as an assistant direct attorney. He attended Midwood High School in Brooklyn.
During this period of his life, Wentworth discovered two of his biggest passions – music and acting.
He joined Sing!, a musical production at high school.
Later, young Miller attended Quaker Valley Senior High School in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, and his hobby during this time was to create and write for school newspapers.
After high school (graduated in 1990), he attended Princeton University and got his degree in literature in 1995.
While in Princeton, Miller was a member of the Quadrangle Club and the Colonial Club.
Also, Wentworth performed with the Princeton Tigertones group during his time at the university.
However, what people don’t know is that Miller started acting during his first school days, and tried to get involved in as much stage productions as possible.
Acting didn’t seem like something serious while he was at Princeton, as all of Miller’s friends were heading to med or law school.
Yet, after graduation, Miller realized he has no passion to go to Wall Street or to be a lawyer, or a teacher, and decided to give acting one more try.
The same year when he graduated (1995), Miller relocates to Los Angeles, as he realized he would actually truly want to become an actor and perform in front of a big and small audience.
This is when his pursue begins.
Miller’s efforts were fruitful, as he made his acting debut 3 years later, in 1998.
However, he had to make baby steps before dreaming big. It is true – it took a while for Miller to start landing roles.
He appeared in an episode of the TV show – “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” where he played Gage Petronzi.
From the year 1999 to 2005, Miller appeared in “Time of Your Life”, “Dinotopia”, “Popular”, “ER”, and “Joan of Acadia”.
Guest roles truly opened a big door for Miller, as he got the chance to appear as Coleman Sick in 2003 movie “The Human Stain”, co-starring with Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman.
This movie dealt with race and identity, and we mentioned the story about the race in the previous chapter.
In one of his interviews, Miller spoke about his passion for this movie and the fact it taught him some important life lessons about himself, as well as about the world.
This was just a great period from him, as he got to the eye of the public, and got the role of Michael Scofield in “Prison Break”, an American television serial drama.
Miller appears as a character who helps his brother (Lincoln Burrows, played by Dominic Purcell) who was accused of a crime he didn’t commit.
Miller’s performance as Scofield broke was a breaking point on his career, as from that moment on – he established himself in the entertainment industry.
He was acting in “Prison Break” for 4 years, when was the fourth season completed.
Even though they made a pause, the fifth season of the TV drama was released 9 years later, in 2017.
Prison Break: The Conspiracy is the name of a video game from 2010, in which Wentworth appears again as Michael Scofield.
Wentworth Miller appeared in 13 episodes of “The Flash”, an American superhero series, going from 2014 to 2018.
His recurring role included Citizen Cold/Captain Cold/Leonard Snart.
Miller also appeared in “Legends of Tomorrow”, another superhero series released from 2016 to 2018.
He acted in “House”, “Law and Order: Special Victims” and “Ghost Whisperer” as well.
Next, we had the chance to see him in “Resident Evil: Afterlife and The Loft”, “The Human Stain”, “Underworld”, and a couple of short films – “The Confession” from 2005, “Room 302”, and “2 Hours 2 Vegas” from 2015.
Miller has his voice roles as well, such as for the 2005 movie “Stealth”, as well as for one episode of “Family Guy” and for “Young Justice”.
Just as we mentioned in the introduction, Wentworth Miller is a screenwriter too.
His screenwriting debut occurred in 2013 when he wrote the script for “Stoker”. the British-American psychological thriller drama film.
Miller appears as a co-producer of this film as well.
However, this was the beginning, as his screenwriting work was followed up by “The Disappointments”, the 2016 American psychological horror film.
Miller is just about to get another chance to prove himself as a screenwriter, as he is negotiating to write an adaptation for “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle”, the novel by David Wroblewski.
When it comes to production, there are speculations Oprah Winfrey and Tom Hanks are about to produce this film.
Wentworth Miller was a nominee for many awards and nominations, and here are some of them.
In 2004, Miller was nominated for his work in “The Human Stain“ for two categories of Black Reel Awards.
Further, he won the second place for Best Male TV Star in 2007 Bravo Otto Award. He got this award for his role in “Prison Break”.
However, this role brought him a couple of more nominations, such as Gold Derby Award, Golden Globe Award, Saturn Award, and Teen Choice Award.
Even though he didn’t get Saturn Award for “Prison Break”, he got it for his role in “The Flash” from 2015.
Besides Saturn Award, he was awarded Best Guest Starring Role on Television for “The Flash” as well.
Miller earned his $4 million fortune working in the entertainment industry and as a screenwriter.
His appearance in numerous commercials, such as for Bebe, French Café, Braun CoolTec, and Chevrolet Cruze brought him additional revenue.
Mariah Carrey asked him to appear in her two music videos – “It’s Like That” and “We Belong Together”.
Miller is believed to be currently single. He seems to be keeping a solid distance with fame and success, and his private life is truly private.
However, he was linked to a couple of celebrities in the past, such as Mariana Klaveno, Amie Bice, Kristoffer Cusick, Luke Macfarlane(2007-2008), and Mark Liddell.
Now that we mentioned Mariana Klaveno, she and Miller were supposedly together during 2006 and 2007.
The couple was seen together at numerous events and paparazzi were all over them.
This American actress became famous for her role in HBO series “True Blood”, and we guess their careers were a touching point.
However, as many already suspected Miller’s sexual orientation, he and Mariana announced they were only friends.
Marianna married another guy in 2012, while Miller came out in 2013. In other words – Wentworth Miller is gay.
Speaking of his relationship with Luke Macfarlane, the two never confirmed the relationship, but definitely were together.
Some gossips back then claimed Miller and the Canadian actor were planning to live together, even though this was never confirmed either.
Even though he intentionally denied that he was gay back in 2007, he made this clear in 2013, when he came out as gay in a letter on GLADD’s website.
In that interview for InStyle Magazine from 2007, Miller answered that he wasn’t gay, that he would like to find a girlfriend and have a family, but that he still hasn’t found the right one.
In this letter, Miller also declined an invitation to attend the Saint Petersburg International Film Festival.
The reason for this was Miller’s intention to protect the Russian government policies on the LGBT community.
Russian government treated gay man and women in a way Miller couldn’t accept. He stated in a letter: “…as a gay man”.
Miller revealed the Human Rights Campaign Dinner in Seattle in 2013, when he was talking about numerous attempts to take his own life as a teenager because he wasn’t able to come out as a gay person.
His involvement in the ManKind Project, according to his words, helped him a lot in becoming part of society, and understanding brotherhood and sisterhood in a better way.
Wentworth is pretty much open about everything he was dealing through his life, including depression.
He talked about his weight gain from 2010, as he was finding comfort in food back then because he was suicidal.
Miller revealed all this in his Facebook post from 2016, where he admitted he was fighting depression since he was a child.
Active Minds (a mental health advocacy group based in the United States) announced that Miller would be their Ambassador from 2016 on.
This group focuses on positive messages that affect the mental health of young people, especially the ones in high schools and colleges.
Miller was a keynote speaker at their national conference back in 2015.
He actually joined a couple of other celebrities, such as actress Lena Dunham, singer Demi Lovato, and Brandon Marshall, NFL player, who also spoke about their mental conditions and changes they made.
Wentworth Miller had the desire to became an ambassador in order to help other people dealing with the feeling of being isolated and different physical conditions.
He is allergic to dogs, cats, and certain foods.
Miller is currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
People Magazine’s announced in 2007 that Miller was one of 100 Most Beautiful People in the World.
