Early years
Tavi Gevinson was born on April 25, 1996 in Chicago in Illinois, United States.
She lived with her father Steve who was the teacher of English language in high school and her mother Berit who was the Hebrew instructor and who migrated from Norway when she was young.
Her family is very religious since her father came from an orthodox Jewish Family (they live their life more strict and religiously corect) and her mother converted in 2001, also to Judaism.
She has two sisters named Rivkah and Miriam (which are also traditional jewish names such as hers is) who were both older than her and all of three have had their Bar Mitzvah ceremonies.
As for her education she went to River Forest High School in Chicago and after that she enrolled the New York University.
She didn’t become a student the same year but she skipped one year and then enrolled college.
Career development
She created her own fashion blog called “Style Rookie” in 2008 and it soon gained a lot of interest because she was 11 years old at the time and she had special outfits and commented on all the trends so everyday her blog became more and more visited.
People were surprised by the way she thinks and by the outfits she combined. But like in everything, some people thought it wasn’t her place.
She realized that she is on the right path to become a fashion icon when she was called to have an interview by the New York Times who wanted to write about her blogg.
Following that event, she was invited to all kinds of fashion events such as New York Fashion Week.
After a while she started traveling all over the world so she came even to Japan and to North Europe and ut was all founded by popular magazines and websites.
She even became a model for some clothing lines which were available in Target stores and she designed a T-shirt four Borders & Frontiers clothing brand.
There were some controversies regarding her age because many magazines and fashion icons thought that she couldn’t have writen her blog without the help of an older person or they stated it is not okay for her to skip school to go to fashion shows.
In 2011 she decided that it was time to show she doesn’t think only about fashion so she stopped writing only about that and she started commenting other topics, more serious and relevant.
The same year she founded her own magazine called “Rookie” and started being mentored by Ira Glass.
The magazine is ment for teenage girls and it doesn’t involve only fashion themes but also a lot of feminist discussions and cultural topics.
In 2012 she gave a speech at TEDxTeen where she primarily talked about the position of women in today’s culture.
Two years in a row, in 2011 and 2012, she was listed on the Forbes “30 under 30” list.
She even started an acting career in 2008 with her roll in a short film named “First Bass”.
Gavinson gave her voice in an animated movie “Cadavar” the same year. In this film she was hired to sing various songs from artists like Pet Shop Boys and Neil Young.
In 2012 she acted in Nicole Holofcener’s movie called “Enough Said”.
In 2014 she played a character in “This is our Youth” Broadway play.
In 2016 she acted in the drama called “The Crucible” which was played at the “W.Kerr Theatre”.
She is a strong young woman who has her opinion so she supported Barack Obama in his campaign for the president in 2012.
She supported the fights for women’s rights especially for Malala Yousafzai who lead a campaign for the rights for education in Pakistan and who was attacked for it.
She’s a very huge fan of Audrey Hepburn so she also owns a pair of her gloves. She received the gloves as a present from an older actress Winona Ryder, who received it from Audrey Hepburn herself.
She also made a lot of interviews with known artist such as Lorde, Emma Watson and Miley Cyrus.
