Smosh is a known American Youtube channel oriented only on sketch comedy content and it is very popular along the United States.
It was created by two men: Anthony Padilla from Sacramento and Ian Hecox also from Sacramento. The channel began with its work in 2005 and is still running.
Early years
Anthony Padilla was born as Daniel Anthony Padilla on September 16, 1987, in Sacramento in California. He grew up alongside his two brothers with whom he is very close. One of them is Mathew and his name occurs in Anthony’s work titled “Anthony’s Long Lost Animation”.
Anthony was a two-year-old child when his parents decided to go separate ways but he is still in touch with all of them. He once mentioned that his mother has agoraphobia.
He was a student at Del Campo High School which is situated in Fair Oaks in California. Ian went to the same school.
He graduated without a problem and enrolled himself into the American River College which is also situated in Sacramento in California. Again, Ian also went to the same college. Anthony soon realized that this wasn’t for him so two years after he entered college, he decided to drop out of it.
The two of them hang out in college and Anthony often drove Ian home since he had a driving license.
They have mentioned this several times in their comedy episodes “Lunchtime with Smosh” and in “Draw My Life” content on their Youtube channel.
Since Padilla’s grandmother comes from the Philippines, Anthony has got 1/4 of Filipino roots and he said it himself in “Sexiest Burger!” Episode.
After dropping out of college, Anthony soon realized that he is wasting time because he didn’t make any plans for what to do after college.
So he started designing websites for people in his neighborhood and for his friends. This gave him enough to pay gas and expenses for the car until he found another way to earn money.
Ian Hecox, Padilla’s partner in Smosh was born on November 30, 1987, in Sacramento in California. He was born Ian Andrew Hecox. Ian and Anthony met while they were 6th graders in Schools. They both went to Del Campo High School.
Ian was a member of the cross country team at the same school. After Ian’s graduated he also enrolled the same university as Padilla: American River College. He was also a member of their cross country team.
As for his parents, we know his mother is named Sharon and that he has a sister.
It was in 2002 that Anthony created “smosh.com”, a website where he wanted to post his flash animations. Ian joined him in this a few months later.
Career development
In 2005, their real-life success started: they have opened a Youtube channel which brought them wide attention and gained them huge popularity in the USA and even wider.
Today this channel has over 23 million subscribers which are an extremely high number which places them un Top 30 channels ever.
Why Smosh? Anthony explained that he made a mistake and called “mosh pit” a “smosh pit”.
Since Ian and Anthony realized they both have a good sense of humor and like making comedy sketches they have decided to start making videos and the first ones were lip sync videos. They were titled “Power Rangers” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.
Their first bigger success came with their lip-sync of “Pokémon anime” which became a big hit and in that period rose Top 1 as the most viewed video. This big success brought them with attention and in 2006 they were introduced to a wide audience in Time Magazine.
After this beginning success, the guys started making short sketches such as “Food Battle” and their popularity continued to rise. They gained subscribers more quickly than any other Youtuber ever.
In 2009 they decided to improve their channel a little so they added some extras, such as gamea and video sections. In 2010 they added “Smosh Pit” blog and uploaded not one, but three different series on the channel. “Ian is Bored” which later became “Smosh is Bored”, “Ask Charlie” and “Lunchtime with Smosh”.
“Lunchtime with Smosh” was very popular because they would eat at different places and answeres fans on their questions on Twitter.
In 2010, the Smosh partnered with Google and made an app for Androids titled “iShut Up App”
In 2012, they added new channels: “El Smosh” in Spanish, “Shut Up! Cartoons” and “Smosh games”
Their video game related music became a big hit and their songs were released on several albums.
In 2013, Smosh released another video game but this time for iPhone users and it was named “Super Head Esploder X”.
In 2014, they released a game “Food Battle: The Game” with them as characters. They raised money on Indiegogo and gave a piece of it to charities.
In 2015, guys decided to release “Smosh Games Alliance” channel.
In spring 2016 their channel launched a sitcom series named “Part-Timers”. It is a fictional comedy-drama.
In 2017, Anthony told his fans that he is leaving Smosh.
He stated that he wanted to work as an independent video maker and that he wants to complete creative freedom. He stated that a part of his decision is connected to Defy Media and the way they handle Smosh brand.
In 2018, Defy Media shut down but Ian Hecox stated that he will find a way for Smosh to continue its work.
In 2015 the movie titled “Smosh: The Movie” was released. It starred Ian and Anthony but also Grace Helbig, Jenna Marbles, Steve Austin and others
In “The Angry Birds Movie” both Ian and Anthony gave voices to two characters.
In 2016, Smosh made “Ghostmates” movie.
In 2007, they have received a Youtube Award for their “Smosh Short 2: Stranded” video, and in 2013 they gained a Social Star Award for Smosh.
In 2014, they won a Streamy Award for Best Gaming Channel and in 2015 a Shorty Award for Youtube Star of the Year.
In 2016 they won a Streamy Award in gaming and Food categories and a Webby Award for their gaming channel.
In 2017 they again received a Streamy Award in two categories: Live and Gaming.
Personal life
Anthony flat-ironed his hair from 2005 until 2013 and it was named “emo hair” by the fans.
He became a vegan in 2013 after he has eaten as a vegan for a while, due to the improvement of his health. He is a huge fan of “Toy Story” and other Disney movies.
Anthony has a dental problem: he wears a mouth guard while sleeping because he grinds with his teeth.
While he was in high school he used to play tennis but lost one tooth because of it.
Anthony shared a very personal thing with his fans in “Draw My Life” where he stated that he suffers from panic attacks which he inherited from his mother. He was 15 years old when he was diagnosed with Henoch-Schonlein Purpura and ADHD.
He was in a four years long relationship with a female Youtuber named Kalel Cullen. They stayed friends after they parted for a while but later Anthony stated that he was manipulated by Kalil and lost his confidence.
He started dating Miel Bredow (known as “mielmonster”) in 2015 and are still together. They keep their privacy more hidden.
In 2017, Anthony officially announced their relationship on Youtube.
He is very close to his mother Leezah, and to his father Dan but he also has a stepfather.
That is why he has two half-brothers and a step-sister.
His first car ever was a Ford Probe but today he drives a Chevrolet Volt.
He once had afro hairstyle while going to high school.
In 2013 he had a surgery to fix his deviated septum.
Ian is very close to his family. His mum Sharon often appears in Smosh videos and his dad was in them twice.
Ian had a very long relationship with Melanie Moat whom he met with through Smosh forums. They started dating in 2007 but ended their relationship in 2014.
His new girlfriend is a Playmate Pamela Horton. They started going out in 2015.
Ian was chubby as a boy but that changed when he started running for the cross country marathons.
Ian also has a dog, a German Shepherd called Daisy. Ian also has ADHD like Anthony. He also has asthma. Ian is allergic to cats.
Ian loves Subaru cars and likes Subaru Impreza WRX the most. He modifies them too.
